Questions to ask before you hire a tradesperson
The key questions that help you hire with confidence and avoid surprises.
Experience and references
Ask how long they've been trading, whether they've done similar jobs recently, and if you can see examples or speak to past customers.
Insurance and qualifications
Check they hold relevant insurance and any required certifications for the work (for example Gas Safe for gas work, or NICEIC/NAPIT for notifiable electrical work).
The quote and the contract
Get the quote in writing with a clear scope. Agree payment stages up front and avoid paying large sums before work starts.
Clarify what happens if extra work is needed once the job is underway.
