How to choose a reliable tradesperson

A practical homeowner checklist for checking experience, quotes, insurance and communication before you hire.

Start with a clear job brief

Reliable trades can quote more accurately when your brief is clear. Include the trade needed, the problem, rough measurements, access notes, photos and your preferred timescale.

If you are not sure what the issue is, say so. A good tradesperson should be able to explain what they need to inspect before pricing.

Check the quote, not just the price

Look for a written scope, materials, waste removal, VAT, payment stages and any exclusions. A cheap quote can become expensive if key items are missing.

For specialist work, ask about qualifications, insurance and whether certificates or building control sign-off are required.

Keep communication traceable

Keep copies of messages, quotes and changes to scope. Agree important decisions in writing so both sides know what has been promised.
